When will this shutdown happen?

Google recently announced that websites made with Google Business Profiles will shut down by March 1st, 2024. Starting then, customers visiting your site will be redirected to your Business Profile instead. This redirection will work until June 10th, 2024. After that, users will get a “page not found” error when trying to visit your website. During all of this, your Business Profile will be unaffected.

Coincidentally, back in June 2023, Squarespace entered a definitive agreement to buy Google Domains and their assets. Google has been directing its Domains customers to Squarespace ever since.

What are the next steps for website owners?

With less than 6 months to spare, here’s a step-by-step guide you can follow:

Step 1: How is your current website built?

You’ll know if you’re using a Google Business Profile website if your URL ends in .business.site or negocio.site. If not, you are free and clear, and this post does not concern you. Carry on!

Step 2:  Explore other options

I’ll give it to you straight, you’re going to have to get a real website. If you choose the DIY route, here are some website builders to consider:

Step 3: Have your new website built

Once you decide what’s best for you, then it’s time to get building. This is your chance to give your online presence a huge makeover and better connect with your audience.

Step 4: Let everyone know

Wherever you had your website displayed before, will now need updating. Think about business cards, advertising, signage, print material, and even online directories like Google Business Profiles. Keeping your customers up-to-date is also a top priority. Use email and social media to spread the word.
